“I thought that after university and after I worked a steady job, I could then pursue my interests in fashion. It’s very roundabout but I felt I had to fulfil my familial obligation before I could do what I wanted to do. However, during my first year of engineering in university I fell into depression. I shut myself out. When I finally told my mom I needed to drop out of school, it broke me and it broke her. She saw my depression as an excuse for weak mentality and laziness, which is how many other older Asians perceive depression as well.

It took a long time for our relationship to heal and for me to realise that pursuing my goals that are outside the expectations set for me didn’t mean I was a failure in any way. It gave me a kind of awakening that other Asians may have felt the same thing at some point in their lives- not being able to admit to having depression, not achieving society/family’s traditional standards of ‘success’, and possibly having nowhere to discuss it. It’s something I strongly wish to change and bring awareness to in my culture.” Mixed Media by Akina up now on Sukeban Magazine
